Efterklang is easily the Danish band that tours most extensively abroad. Since their first gig abroad in 2005, they have completed three successful tours in the US and five in Europe.

Among the highlights have been ecstatic shows in front of 500 people on the American West Coast as well as the special arrangement “Performing Parades“ at the Barbican in London, where Efterklang played their entire album “Parades” together with the Britten Sinfonia. An audience of 1800 saw the show and received it with standing ovations.

From DIY to international acclaim
The experimental ensemble has a large international fan base, and not just from touring. Their latest album “Magic Chairs” was received with overwhelmingly positive half- and full page reviews in newspapers and magazines around the world.
 - It’s incredibly satisfying. It tells us that we have established ourselves as a band to take seriously. And it feels great to have an audience in places like Vancouver or Glasgow, says Efterklang’s bassist and manager Rasmus Stolberg.

Efterklang was founded in 2000, and for the last two years, they have been able to live off their music. But the success comes after years of energetic do-it-yourself efforts. Especially Rasmus Stolberg has – in his role of manager – worked to organise tours, contact international partners and agents, promote the band and negotiate contracts. And the efforts have paid off. Efterklang recently signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV as well as a contract with the highly esteemed UK record label 4AD.
 - We definitely feel a difference. 4AD’s records are sold everywhere. We’re selling a lot more internationally now, says Rasmus Stolberg.

Dreams for the future
The Danish press has repeatedly announced Efterklang’s big breakthrough to be just around the corner, but the band is careful not to let itself get carried away.
 - We prefer that these things happen in small, natural steps. And we would rather focus on what we actually like doing together, which is the music. Besides, only very few orchestras who play our kind of music actually make it to the international charts, adds Stolberg – although he admits with a grin that “Magic Chairs” did actually reach the Danish Top 10.

- Our dream is not bigger audiences so much as reaching new countries like Australia, Japan - or Portugal, which is the only European country we haven’t played in yet. We enjoy going new places with our music. And I believe it means a lot when Danish bands play abroad. It’s a way of showing other sides of Danish culture – that we’re not all overprivileged xenophobes.
